Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
