"When are you speaking to Haim?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only one problem: The author likewise longs to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile supporters have openly begged for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their music videos repeatedly feature them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to start a band."

"So all gets an invitation to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The band are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project emerged from a time of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The trio's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international audience.

But the band will always be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
