The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve with a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
