England and Welsh Drawn Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the final, presuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools conclude according to the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both England and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
